Staff augmentation

IT Staff Augmentation Services

Staff augmentation is the middle ground between hiring permanently and outsourcing a project: you add vetted engineers to your own team, under your management and your process, and scale that up or down as the work changes. We have run it this way since 2017.

Augmentation works on both models. Monthly per person when the need is a role you would otherwise hire for; hourly when the need is capacity that comes and goes. You can mix the two across a team.

  • Fill a role now
  • Add a missing skill
  • Cover a peak
  • Try before you hire

The distinction that matters: with staff augmentation you keep ownership of the product, the roadmap and the technical decisions. We supply people, not a black box. That is the opposite of handing a spec to an agency and hoping the thing that comes back is what you meant.

It fits a specific set of situations well: a permanent hire is months away and the roadmap cannot wait; a project needs a skill your team does not have and will not need forever; a busy quarter needs extra hands without a permanent cost; or you want to try working with someone before committing to a full-time offer.

Every engineer is interviewed for depth before you ever see a CV, works in your tools and your review process, and sits behind an Upforce lead for code review and leave cover. Contracts are month to month, IP is assigned to you, and there is no lock-in.

Questions we get asked

How is staff augmentation different from outsourcing a project?

With augmentation you keep the product, the roadmap and the technical decisions, and the engineers work inside your team and process. Outsourcing hands a scope to a vendor who owns delivery. Augmentation adds capacity to your team; outsourcing replaces a chunk of it.

When does augmentation make more sense than a permanent hire?

When you need the capacity before a permanent hire could realistically start, when the skill is needed for a phase rather than forever, or when you want to work with someone on real tasks before making an offer. For a permanent, core, long-term role, hire permanently.

Do the engineers work under our management or yours?

Yours, day to day: your standup, your board, your definition of done. An Upforce lead handles code review, leave cover and escalation, and does not sit between you and the developer.

What is your vetting and acceptance rate?

A structured technical interview, a coding exercise reviewed by a senior developer, and a communication screen. Around one in ten people we interview reaches a client engagement, and you still interview the shortlist and make the final call.

What are the commercial terms?

Month to month, priced per person for monthly engagements or per hour for hourly work. Thirty days notice on monthly engagements, IP assigned to you in the contract, no setup fee, no lock-in.

Can we hire an augmented engineer permanently?

Yes. No conversion fee after twelve months; before that, a modest agreed buyout. Trying before you hire is one of the reasons teams use augmentation in the first place.
